A World Without Tuberculosis: Ending the Deadliest Infectious Disease with Partners In Health
by Partners In Health (PIH)Every 20 seconds, someone dies of Tuberculosis (TB)—a preventable and curable disease. Many assume TB is a relic of the past, once devastating Europe and the U.S., killing 1 in 7 people. But today, the difficult-to-detect airborne, infectious disease remains an inequitable and deadly threat worldwide. Even though a cure exists, TB continues to kill at unparalleled rates with over 80% of TB cases—and fatalities—in low- and middle-income countries.
Since its founding, Partners In Health (PIH) has been a global leader in the fight for equitable access to treatment for TB and multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). For over two decades, PIH has accompanied governments and patients to find, treat, and prevent TB, especially in the world’s poorest communities. Its community-based approach to care has resulted in some of the highest cure rates and lowest treatment default rates ever recorded.
There is an exciting momentum around new tools for TB—from the shortened regimens that PIH helped demonstrate are effective and shift global protocols, to technologies like AI-enabled x-ray to make screening easier and more effective, to price reductions for point of care diagnostics.
Your support is vital:
Every $3 donated can provide an X-ray screening to help diagnose TB.
Every $150 donated can provide a four-month course of treatment for a person with TB
Every $500 can provide a six-month course of treatment for a person with drug-resistant TB.
Now is the time to leverage this momentum and demonstrate to the world how PIH’s comprehensive approach to searching for, treating, and preventing the world’s deadliest infectious disease can bend the arc towards a world without TB.
