Trans Lifeline is an LGBTQ grassroots 501(c)(3) organization providing direct emotional and financial support to transgender people in crisis. Founded in 2014, we are the first peer support hotline in the United States and Canada staffed entirely by trans people and available in both English and Spanish, offering a rare space where callers can speak with someone who shares their lived experience.
At our core, we believe in care rooted in community. Through our hotline, we offer confidential, non-judgmental emotional support without non-consensual police intervention, prioritizing autonomy, harm reduction, and trust. In addition to crisis support, we provide microgrants that help trans people meet basic needs such as legal name and gender marker changes, identification updates, and other critical resources that reduce systemic barriers to stability.
Demand for our services continues to grow amid escalating anti-trans legislation, public rhetoric, and economic instability. As a trans-led organization, we fill critical gaps left by traditional mental health systems, especially for those who do not feel safe accessing services that involve law enforcement or lack cultural competency.
Sustained and expanded funding is essential to maintaining this lifeline. Financial support allows us to recruit, train, and compensate hotline operators, extend operating hours, and reduce wait times so more callers can access care when they need it most. Funding also ensures we can continue and expand our microgrant programs, providing immediate, low-barrier financial assistance that can be life-changing for recipients navigating legal, medical, and survival needs. Additionally, we invest in trauma stewardship and staff support systems so our team can continue showing up for our community with care and resilience.
As an organization rooted in mutual aid and community accountability, we rely heavily on individual donors to sustain our work. Continued investment will allow us not only to meet increasing demand but to deepen our peer-led model of care, ensuring that trans people have access to the connection, safety, and resources they need to survive and thrive.
